What is the ARW file type?
.ARW files are Sonys proprietary RAW image format used by their Alpha series digital cameras. These files contain uncompressed, unprocessed image data directly from the cameras sensor, preserving maximum quality and detail. While larger than JPEG files, .ARW files offer photographers greater flexibility in post-processing, allowing adjustments to white balance, exposure, and color without quality loss.
What is the JPEG file type?
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a widely-used digital image format that efficiently compresses photographs and complex graphics. It reduces file size by selectively discarding visual data that human eyes are less likely to notice. While JPEG compression is lossy, meaning some quality is sacrificed, it maintains good visual appearance at reasonable file sizes, making it ideal for web images and photo sharing.
Does JPEG support transparency?
JPEG files do not support transparency. The format only handles fully opaque pixels and cannot display partially transparent or completely transparent areas. When saving an image with transparent elements as a JPEG, transparent areas typically convert to solid white or black backgrounds. For images requiring transparency, use PNG or WebP formats instead, as these support alpha channels for transparent and semi-transparent elements.
Do I lose quality when converting to JPEG?
Converting from Sony RAW (.arw) to JPEG results in noticeable quality loss due to compression. RAW files contain unprocessed sensor data with greater color depth, dynamic range, and editing flexibility. JPEG compression discards information to reduce file size, leading to:
• Reduced color information (8-bit vs 14-bit)
• Limited dynamic range
• Compressed tonal gradations
• Less editing flexibility
• Potential compression artifacts
• Loss of shadow/highlight detail
While high-quality JPEG conversions can still produce visually pleasing images, the loss is permanent and cannot be recovered. For maximum image quality, keep original RAW files and export JPEGs as needed.
