Convert JPG to AVIF

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) files are widely used digital image formats that efficiently compress photographs and complex graphics. Using lossy compression, JPGs reduce file size by selectively discarding visual data while maintaining reasonable image quality. They support millions of colors and are ideal for sharing photos online, in emails, or storing digital memories. Common file extensions include .jpg and .jpeg.

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format that offers superior compression and quality compared to JPEG, PNG, and WebP. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media, AVIF supports both lossy and lossless compression, HDR, wide color gamut, and transparency. Its efficient encoding reduces file sizes while maintaining excellent image quality, making it ideal for web content and digital media storage.

AVIF output is useful when you want small files, for example on a website, and the people or software receiving them support AVIF. It can be smaller than JPG at similar visual quality, but results vary by image and quality setting. Support is less universal than JPG, so check compatibility before sending AVIF files.

.AVIF image format fully supports transparency through an alpha channel, similar to PNG files. The format handles both binary (fully transparent or opaque) and variable transparency levels (partial opacity). When compressing images with transparency, AVIF maintains high quality while achieving better compression ratios compared to PNG and WebP formats. This makes AVIF an excellent choice for web graphics requiring transparency, such as logos, icons, and overlays.

You can lose some detail. Framebird decodes the JPG pixels and encodes a new AVIF file, and AVIF output can lose detail. The default quality setting is 90. Setting quality to 100 can reduce loss, but it does not guarantee an identical image. Detail already lost in the JPG cannot be restored. Source metadata is not copied. Keep your original file in case you need it later.
