What RAW files are supported?
We support all common RAW file formats including 3FR, ARW, CR2, CR3, CRW, DCR, DNG, ERF, FFF, MRW, NEF, NRW, ORF, PEF, RAF, RAW by manufacturers like Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, Leica, Hasselblad, and more.
What is the RAW file type?
A .raw file contains unprocessed, uncompressed image data directly from a digital cameras sensor. Unlike JPEG or PNG formats, RAW files preserve all original image information, allowing photographers maximum control over post-processing adjustments like white balance, exposure, and color. These files are typically larger and require specific software for viewing and editing, but offer superior image quality and flexibility.
What is the JPEG file type?
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a widely-used digital image format that efficiently compresses photographs and complex graphics. It reduces file size by selectively discarding visual data that human eyes are less likely to notice. While JPEG compression is lossy, meaning some quality is sacrificed, it maintains good visual appearance at reasonable file sizes, making it ideal for web images and photo sharing.
Does JPEG support transparency?
JPEG files do not support transparency. The format only handles fully opaque pixels and cannot display partially transparent or completely transparent areas. When saving an image with transparent elements as a JPEG, transparent areas typically convert to solid white or black backgrounds. For images requiring transparency, use PNG or WebP formats instead, as these support alpha channels for transparent and semi-transparent elements.
Do I lose quality when converting to JPEG?
Converting from RAW to JPEG always results in some quality loss due to JPEGs lossy compression. RAW files contain unprocessed, uncompressed sensor data with higher bit depth and wider color gamut. JPEG compression discards some image information to reduce file size, affecting fine details, color transitions, and dynamic range.
The quality loss severity depends on:
- JPEG compression level chosen
- Image complexity
- Original RAW file bit depth
- Editing performed during conversion
While casual viewers may not notice minor quality differences, photographers and professionals working with detailed images should preserve RAW files for maximum editing flexibility and image quality.
