WebP images feature transparency like PNG files and can display animations like GIF files. This format helps websites load faster and reduces bandwidth usage.
Why should I use WEBP instead of JPG?
WebP output is useful when smaller files matter, such as images for websites, and the receiving software supports the format. WebP can be smaller than JPG at similar visual quality, though results depend on the image and quality setting. If a client, printer, or older app may not open WebP, JPG is the safer choice.
Does WEBP support transparency?
.WebP images fully support transparency through an alpha channel, similar to PNG files. The format allows both binary (fully transparent or fully opaque) and variable transparency levels (partial opacity). When using lossy compression, WebP maintains high-quality transparency while achieving smaller file sizes compared to PNG. The lossless WebP variant preserves transparency without any quality degradation, making it ideal for logos, icons, and graphics requiring clear backgrounds.
Do I lose quality when converting to WEBP?
You can lose some detail. Framebird decodes the TIFF pixels and encodes a new WebP file, and WebP output can lose detail. The default quality setting is 90. Setting quality to 100 can reduce loss, but it does not guarantee an identical image. Source metadata is not copied, so embedded details may not carry over. Keep your original TIFF, especially if it is your master copy.
