What is the JFIF file type?
JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is a standardized image file format that stores digital photos and graphics using lossy compression. Created by C-Cube Microsystems, it's essentially a more detailed specification of the JPEG format. JFIF files maintain good image quality while reducing file size, making them ideal for web use and digital sharing, though they may lose some quality during compression.
What is the PNG file type?
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) files are lossless image files that support transparency and millions of colors. Created in 1996 as an alternative to GIF, PNGs excel at displaying sharp graphics, logos, and text-heavy images. They maintain crisp edges and vibrant colors without quality loss during compression. While larger in file size than JPEGs, PNGs are ideal for web graphics requiring transparency or precise detail preservation.
Why should I use PNG instead of JPG?
PNG output is useful when you need transparency or want to keep the decoded pixels without further compression loss, such as for graphics, screenshots, or files you will edit again. The tradeoff is size: photographs saved as PNG are often much larger than JPG. For sharing photos where size matters, JPG may be the more practical choice.
Does PNG support transparency?
PNG files fully support transparency through an alpha channel, allowing both fully transparent and semi-transparent pixels. This makes PNG ideal for logos, icons, and images that need to blend seamlessly with different backgrounds. Unlike JPEG, PNG's lossless compression preserves sharp edges and transparency without quality degradation, though file sizes may be larger. The format supports both binary transparency (fully visible or invisible pixels) and variable transparency levels (partial opacity).
Do I lose quality when converting to PNG?
PNG encoding is lossless, so Framebird keeps the decoded pixels exactly as they come out of your JFIF file. It cannot restore detail that was already lost when the JFIF was first compressed as a JPEG. Framebird writes a new PNG file, which may be larger than the original. Source metadata is not copied, so keep your original JFIF file as well.
