What is the PNG file type?
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) files are lossless image files that support transparency and millions of colors. Created in 1996 as an alternative to GIF, PNGs excel at displaying sharp graphics, logos, and text-heavy images. They maintain crisp edges and vibrant colors without quality loss during compression. While larger in file size than JPEGs, PNGs are ideal for web graphics requiring transparency or precise detail preservation.
What is the JPG file type?
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) files are widely used digital image formats that efficiently compress photographs and complex graphics. Using lossy compression, JPGs reduce file size by selectively discarding visual data while maintaining reasonable image quality. They support millions of colors and are ideal for sharing photos online, in emails, or storing digital memories. Common file extensions include .jpg and .jpeg.
Does JPG support transparency?
JPG/JPEG files do not support transparency. The format only handles fully opaque pixels and cannot display partially transparent or completely transparent areas. For images requiring transparency, use PNG or WebP formats instead. PNG files support both binary transparency (fully transparent or fully opaque) and alpha channel transparency (varying levels of transparency), while WebP offers modern compression with transparency support.
Do I lose quality when converting to JPG?
You can lose some detail. Framebird decodes the PNG pixels and encodes a new JPG file, and JPG compression is lossy. The default quality setting is 90. Setting quality to 100 can reduce loss, but it does not guarantee an identical image. Fine edges, text and flat colors may show artifacts. Source metadata is not copied. Keep your original PNG in case you need it later.
